At what age should my child see a dentist?

Your child is growing… and those baby teeth are developing at a rapid rate, so you may be wondering when they should have their first dental visit.

At Oak Avenue Dental, we have a big focus on dental paediatric care. We encourage parents to bring in their children for their first visit between the ages of 4 and 6, unless you have concerns about their teeth earlier.

Four-year-old children are pretty communicative and understanding of the world around them, and it’s an ideal time to get them comfortable and familiar with coming to the dentist. We’d recommend bringing them in for a simple check up and a free ride in the chair!

Remember that your child’s mouth is rapidly developing. The first adult teeth won’t start arriving till around 5 or 6 years old. Depending on your child’s oral health, we won’t do a proper clean until they are around 6 years old. Of course, this may vary according to your, and your child’s, needs.

Coming in for a quick examination and a clean is a nice gentle way to get used to a dentist’s surgery. They’ll have fun seeing all the instruments and checking out our amazing intra-oral camera. They’ll come away with shiny, clean teeth and their head full of facts about dental health.

It’s also a chance for you, as the parents, to ask our dentists any questions or concerns you may have about your child’s oral health. We can give you oral hygiene tips and things to watch out for.

We can help you with your child’s brushing technique and give your child a proper oral routine. This is really important as it sets up the foundations of good dental health for the rest of their lives.

If you have an infant under the age of 4 with oral health problems or concerns, it’s a good idea to see a paediatric dental specialist.

Your teeth will be with you for your whole life, so it makes sense to have your child start dental check-ups early on.
